The wild spirits of Karelia - Pasi Klemettinen
On January 12, 1885, a poltergeist arrived at the Martin family's cottage in Ylöjärvi. Efraim and Eva Martin watched in horror as objects from their house began to fly through the air across the rooms. The incident, reported in the newspapers, attracted curious onlookers, and the Martin family was charged with witchcraft.
The Ylöjärvi poltergeist is the most famous ghost in Finnish history, but by no means the only one. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Finland seemed to be full of poltergeist cases, especially in the Karelian region. Who the hell was behind it all?
The Wild Spirits of Karelia leads the reader on the trail of devils, from the ghost of Myllymäki to the scratcher of Uuksujärvi.
PhD Pasi Klemettinen is a traditionalist who has written a thesis on riotous devils.
