Interest in magic, witchcraft, and sorcery has grown in recent years. Magic is seen in video games, on movie screens, and in literature, but also in the everyday lives of many. Magic touches each of us, in one way or another.
Dimensions of Magic Then and Now brings together the latest, multidisciplinary research by Finnish magic and witchcraft scholars. The authors represent research in history, art, literature, religion, and culture. Geographically, the articles are set in Finland and its surrounding areas, temporally from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Today, social media also influences the study of magic. Witches are more connected than ever, sharing their teachings on Instagram and TikTok. The ideas of different belief traditions flow into each other and overlap, forming new theories and practices. Witches still receive clients, and in their own lives, a person who does not believe in magic may shoot fireballs from their hands as a video game character during their evening talks.
Today's manifestations of magic show that magic has not disappeared from our society.
