A mala is originally a Hindu and Buddhist instrument for prayer and meditation. It is used to count mantras during meditation. A mantra is a collection of words, often from Sanskrit, that is repeated a number of times - traditionally 108 -. During the repetition, the focus is on the meaning and vibration of the words, possibly combined with associated visualization. By practicing this meditation technique, the thoughts calm down and the body relaxes. Today, the mala is also used as a fashion accessory.
